🎥 Was it a valid goal or not? Referee Department returns in detail on the crucial phase in Club Brugge – Cercle Brugge – Football news

The heart of blue Bruges stood still for a few minutes yesterday. Ultimately, Jonathan Lardot decided not to award a goal to Cercle Brugge due to prior offside. What does the Referee Department think of the phase?

Six minutes. It seemed to take forever before VAR and Jonathan Lardot came up with a decision. The final verdict: it didn’t matter whether the ball had crossed the goal line or not. The images previously indicated offside.

“I also found it an extremely difficult phase to assess,” Frank De Bleeckere admits Under Review. “I was sitting in front of the television and had to re-watch the images. Initially, everything and everyone is looking at a different phase. Has the ball crossed the goal line or not?”

Ultimately there was also a decision about that phase. “We don’t have goal-line technology in Belgium. But the VAR looked at the phase from all possible angles and came to the conclusion that the ball had indeed crossed the goal line.”

“The VAR must then look at what actions took place prior to that action,” De Bleeckere explains. “That is standard procedure. That always happens. At that moment it was noticed that two players from Cercle Brugge were in an offside position.”

Did VAR make a correct decision in Club Brugge – Cercle Brugge?

For De Bleeckere, the goal was rightly disallowed. “One of those two players actually participated in the game situation. At that moment, the offside regulations come into play and the action actually ended.”

“It indeed took a long time before a decision was made,” the former top referee also knows. “But such a decision should not be underestimated. This was the decision of the season. They acted very well and correctly.”
