Finnish Specialist Ville Peltonen Joins Latvian National Hockey Team Coaching Staff for 2024 World Championship

On Tuesday, the LHF announced that Lauris Dārziņš, Artūrs Irbe, Petri Numelins, Raimonds Vilkoits, video coach Pēteris Groms, physical training specialist Āriks Visockis will still help Vītoliņš in his work with the national team, while Peltonen will take the place of domestic specialist Ābol.

“After unforgettable hockey events in last year’s championship, we have set ourselves new goals and challenges. I am happy to announce that Villes [Peltonena] joining the coaching staff of the national team in the upcoming world championship,” LHF quotes Vītoliņa. “His career achievements do not require unnecessary comments. While meeting and getting to know the Finnish specialist, it became clear that Ville is very knowledgeable about our players and the team as a whole.”

As the head coach of the national team pointed out, Peltonen will definitely be able to give valuable advice and recommendations to both the coaching staff and national hockey players. “We are always looking for ways to develop and become better,” states Vītoliņš. “I would like to say a big thank you to Artis Ābols for his work in the Latvian national team. I wish Artis success in his future coaching career, who is still in the LHF national team system and performs the duties of the head coach of the Latvian U-20 national team.”

Vītoliņš also revealed that on April 1, the national team will officially start preparing for the world championship, and on April 10 and 11, two test matches with the Finnish national team are scheduled for “Arena Riga”. The national team will conclude the preparation phase with two matches on May 3 and 4 at home against the Norwegian national team.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to join the Latvian national team. I am also happy to work together with Harija Vītoliņa, his coaching staff, staff and Latvian players at the 2024 World Championship,” Peltonen said after joining the coaching staff.

During his coaching career, the 50-year-old Finnish specialist worked as an assistant in the Finnish and German national teams, managed the Swiss club “Lausanne” and assisted in the “Bern” club. For the past three seasons, Peltonen has been managing the Finnish top league club Helsinki HIFK.

During his playing career, Peltonen became the world champion once, won silver medals four times and won bronze medals three times. Peltonen also won four bronze and one silver medal at the Olympic Games. The 50-year-old Peltonen is also included in the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and Finnish hockey halls of fame.

The first two test games for the Latvian hockey team against the Austrian national team will take place on April 4 and 5. These two matches will be played behind closed doors, followed by the matches against Finland and Norway. All test matches of the Latvian national hockey team can be watched live on the TV6 channel.

The Latvian hockey team will go to the world championship in the Czech Republic on May 9. The 2024 championship will be held in Prague and Ostrava from May 10 to 26. In group B, the Latvian hockey team will compete against the teams of France, Germany, Kazakhstan, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden and the USA.
