Ukrainian tennis player Lessya Zurenko has criticized the public’s war-weariness in the ongoing conflict with the Russian invaders in her homeland. “People don’t want to talk about war anymore, they don’t want to hear bad news anymore,” said the number 28 seed after the clean exit at the Australian Open on Friday against defending champion Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus (0:6, 0:6).

Zurenko still tries to “remember that there is still war – even if it seems that the whole world no longer wants to hear about it.” The war in Ukraine is a part of her life and one needs to talk about it, said the 34-year-old. She also refused Sabalenka the obligatory handshake after the match.

Zurenko’s compatriot Marta Kostjuk also recalled the situation in her homeland with emotional words. “The war is still there. People are still dying every day,” said the 21-year-old from Kiev after reaching the round of 16 over Russia’s Elina Avanessjan (2:6, 6:4, 6:4). She also refrained from shaking hands with her opponent.

“Unfortunately,” what is happening in Ukraine is “no longer breaking news,” said Kostjuk, referring to the war that has been raging in her homeland for almost two years now. For her and her compatriots, it is still a reality: “My whole family is in Kiev. My mother sends me videos when rockets fly over the house.” Kostyuk will therefore never tire of “reminding everyone that it goes on and on, that it should be stopped.”
