German Tennis Stars Prepare for Australia Open Qualifying Battles

The first Grand Slam tournament of the year begins in Melbourne in a few days. Numerous German players are still hoping to make it into the main draw, but first they have to get through qualification. It is now clear who they have to eliminate in the first round.

A total of seven German tennis stars are hoping to make it into the main draw at the qualification for the Australia Open, which begins this Monday. Only two representatives of the DTB are seeded in the qualification: Anna-Lena Friedsam (No. 17) and Eva Lys (No. 26).

The tasks on paper for Friedsam and Lys are correspondingly feasible. The former will face the unseeded Czech Gabriela Knutson at the start, while Lys will face the Slovenian Veronika Erjavec.

Difficult hurdles for Seidel and Niemeier

18-year-old Ella Seidel, on the other hand, has a tough nut to crack in the first round. The Hamburger has to play against the US American Elizabeth Mandlik, who is number eight. Jule Niemeier will initially face the Russian Anastasia Tikhonova and could face number two seed Renata Zarazua from Mexico in the second of three rounds.

Noma Noha Akugue has a similarly difficult path ahead of her. After her first round duel against the Korean Su Jeong Jang, she has a duel with the experienced Brit Heather Watson.

Hassan threatens a duel with number two

For men, the DTB only sends two players into the race: Rudolf Molleker and Benjamin Hassan. Molleker will face Russian Ivan Gakhov in his first match. If he survives the first two rounds, he will have a duel with the Argentinian Diego Schwartzman in the “final”.

It’s going to be tough for Hassan, who has the Briton Jan Choinski in front of him in the first round and could face the second-seeded Italian Flavio Cobolli in the match afterwards.

The German qualifying matches at a glance:

Benjamin Hassan (Weltrangliste Nr. 151) vs. Jan Choinski (Nr. 160)
