Almost two years after the start of the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the question surrounding the presence of Russian and Belarusian players on the circuit is almost no longer relevant.
But some like the Pole Tomasz Wiktorowski, coach of world number 1 Iga Swiatek, believe that these athletes should have been banned from competing from the start of the war.
“Do the matches against Sabalenka and the Russian and Belarusian players have a different context from the other matches? No, at least from my point of view. A tense atmosphere always sells well. Likewise, the rivalries between Borg and McEnroe, Sampras and Agassi or Nadal and Federer were built on contrast. Was there politics behind these rivalries? That’s right, and the WTA made a mistake by allowing the Russians and Belarusians to play. But there is now no point in returning to this question. A difficult decision should have been made from the start. »
