Xan de Waard was named the best player in the world by the international hockey federation FIH on Tuesday. In the men’s category, Thierry Brinkman narrowly missed out on winning the prestigious prize. Dutch goalkeeper Pirmin Blaak also won prizes.

The 28-year-old De Waard was preferred in the election to the Belgian Charlotte Englebert, the Australian Rosie Malone, the Argentinian Eugenia Trinchinetti and the German Sonja Zimmermann. The 204-time international will receive the award for the first time in her career.

De Waard has been one of the important players of the Dutch team for many years. In 2022 she was chosen as captain by national coach Paul van Ass. The SCHC player became European champion with the Dutch team in August.

With the honorary title, De Waard follows in the footsteps of Felice Albers, who won the prize in 2022. In 2019, veteran Eva de Goede won the prize. Former Dutch internationals Naomi van As and Maartje Paumen won the award twice.

Blaak best goalkeeper, Annan also wins prize

In the men’s category, 160-time Dutch international Brinkman was the only Dutch field player who had a chance of winning the honorary title, but he finished in second place behind the Indian Hardik Singh.

Blaak received the prize from the goalkeepers. The 35-year-old Rotterdam resident had already been nominated twice before (2018 and 2022). The goalkeeper became European champion with the Dutch team last summer. Goalkeeper Josine Koning was also nominated, but Den Bosch’s goalkeeper was left out of the prizes.

Former Dutch national team coach Alyson Annan surprisingly won the award for best coach. Fifty-year-old Annan left as national coach of the Dutch national team in 2022 and went to work for the women’s team of China. With that team, Annan won the Asian Games and qualified for the Paris Olympics.
