Diego Ocampo Signs Three-Year Extension with Ureta Tizona Burgos Group Until 2027

Diego Ocampo will be the cornerstone of the Ureta Tizona Burgos Group until 2027. The club has tied up its coach and alma mater from the current stage of the historic Burgos team for another three seasons, expanding the horizon of consolidation of the project in the medium term.

It is no secret to anyone that the board of directors of the Azulón club highly values the work of the Orense coach both with the first team and throughout the training structure in the populous Tizona youth academy. Thus, it is not surprising that the club president described the renewal of the Galician coach as “very good news for the Tizona Basketball Club.”

Miguel Ángel Benavente stressed that the board always seeks “stability, the best sporting successes have been accompanied by stability, and that is why it is important to leave this renewal signed. “When you have an open person, eager to work and see the entity grow, and very dedicated to its identity and philosophy, they make us renew for these three seasons to establish a project.”

Even more effusive, perhaps due to his direct work shoulder to shoulder with Ocampo himself, was the Tizona sports director, José Manuel Naveira, who admitted that for the club, the squad and the technical staff the renewal of the renowned coach “is a gift of Christmas”.

«Since Diego’s arrival we have always felt very satisfied. Everything that he has contributed to the club and the structure, from the youth team and the first team, is something that we value greatly. It is a privilege that he can continue with us, and to be able to announce it at this time, it is a great satisfaction,” he explained yesterday at the presentation of the agreement to extend the contract for three seasons until 2027.

Diego Ocampo not only thanked the club’s directors for this trust in piloting Tizona’s destinies in the medium term, but also confirmed that this was his intention before sitting down to negotiate the renewal of this contract, “which reflects the ideas of both parties.” «We want to continue building, growing, with great enthusiasm, great desire and build an identity of being a team and an entity that excites people. My experience has taught me that you should be where they want you, and that is why I am here and I will continue here,” he admitted.

Career in Tizona

Diego Ocampo arrived in Burgos in the 2021/22 season, right at the beginning of the playoffs for promotion to the LEB Oro. Despite not achieving promotion, the man from Orense continued at the controls of Tizona the following season, and together with the squad Burgos made history in the LEB Plata.

The Burgos team, led by Ocampo, had a spectacular regular season. In total, Tizona achieved a total of 24 victories for only 2 defeats. In addition, they won the LEB Plata Cup against Hestia Menorca in Mahón by 76-90. As group winners, Tizona faced CB Prat in the Final for promotion to LEB Oro. Despite losing in El Plantío by 2 points in the second leg, the wide margin of the first leg (16 points) granted the promotion of Tizona to the second category of national basketball, the LEB Oro.

In the current campaign, the team from Burgos continues with its great trajectory. Tizona is the best ranked of the newly promoted with 10 wins and only 4 losses. This balance places them in fifth position in the league, tied with 3 other teams, and just one game away from qualifying for the Princess Cup.
