Oliver Glasner could celebrate a comeback as coach six months after parting ways with Eintracht Frankfurt.
In the summer, Oliver Glasner (49) and Eintracht Frankfurt went their separate ways. Most recently, the sheikhs from Saudi Arabia tried to lure the Salzburgers into the desert with their millions. But he refused, apparently preferring to stay in Europe. At the start of the season he was also on the shortlist for the boss position at Olympique Lyon. But back then, Fabio Grosso won the race.
Now another new job awaits the 49-year-old: he fits the requirements profile perfectly at Union Berlin.
It’s not just Rapid Vienna that is currently looking for a coach. Union Berlin also has to fill the position after five years with Urs Fischer on the sidelines. On Wednesday, the German cult club parted ways with the Swiss after 14 games without a win. Manager Oliver Ruhnert is only at the beginning of the search for a coach. According to several German media outlets, Glasner’s name is now circulating around the Alte Försterei.
Difficult requirement profile
But the task in Germany’s capital couldn’t be more difficult. On the one hand, he has to lead last season’s sensational team out of the bottom of the table, but on the other hand, he also has to be able to deal with stars like European champion Leonardo Bonucci. During his time in Frankfurt he proved that he has the right feel for it. There, Glasner crowned his young coaching career by winning the 2022 Europa League.
At least one compatriot could welcome Glasner in Berlin: captain and ex-Rapidler Christopher Trimmel is considered the undisputed leader at the old forestry company. Union is currently still fighting for third place in their group in the Champions League and the associated stay in international business.
This would allow the “Irons” to attack again in the Europa League after the winter break. With Glasner on the sidelines?
