Richard Carapaz and Tamara Salazar to Lead Ecuadorian Delegation for Pan American Games 2023

Guayaquil (Ecuador), Oct 2 (EFE).- The cyclist Richard Carapaz and the weightlifter Tamara Salazar, Olympic medalists in Tokyo 2020, will lead the Ecuadorian delegation for the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile 2023, made up of 167 athletes.

This was announced this Monday by the Ecuadorian Olympic Committee in a statement detailing that among the 167 athletes accredited to the highest sporting event in America there are 89 women and 78 men.

Carapaz will lead Ecuadorian cycling for the first time in the Pan American Games and will go with the desire to score points for his classification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The ‘Carchi Locomotive’ will participate in the time trial and road tests, the modality in which it won the gold medal at Tokyo 2020.

In weightlifting, one of the disciplines with the greatest medal hopes for Ecuador, Salazar will compete, who already won the silver medal in the last Olympic Games and who will now seek to win the crown in the -81 kilo division.

The Ecuadorian delegation will have as standard bearers in Santiago 2023 the weightlifter Angie Palacios and the walker Daniel Pintado, who also aspire to win medals.

In the case of Pintado, this is one of those classified for Paris 2024, and Palacios will take advantage of the great moment he is experiencing in weightlifting to score points in search of his second Olympic classification, since he debuted in Tokyo, where he took sixth place. in its category.

In athletics, Ecuador will participate with a young team, where the majority of its members achieved their place for Santiago 2023 in the Junior Pan American Games held in 2021, as is the case of Glenda Morejón and David Hurtado, in progress; and Anahí Suárez, in speed.

Although Ecuador reached 176 places with direct classification, several athletes will be left out of the Pan American Games in Chile, such as tennis players Emilio Gómez, due to injury, and Álvaro Guillén and Gonzalo Escobar, to give priority to their professional calendar.

The walkers Jordy Jiménez and Johana Ordóñez, the marathon runner Christhian Vascónez, the sprinter Ángela Tenorio and the javelin thrower Juleisy Angulo will also not be there due to physical problems, while the long distance runners Silvia Ortiz and Segundo Jami chose to participate in other events.

Ecuador will participate in Santiago 2023 in athletics, badminton, sports dance, bowling, boxing, canoeing, cycling, climbing, equestrian, fencing, gymnastics, golf, judo, karate, weightlifting, wrestling, swimming, skating, modern pentathlon, racquetball, rowing, squash, surfing, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, archery, triathlon, shooting sports, sailing and volleyball.

The objective of the Ecuadorian delegation will be to surpass the Lima 2019 performance, Ecuador’s best in the Pan American Games, by achieving 32 medals, including ten golds, seven silvers and fifteen bronzes.
