The night session, i.e. the evening program, today at the US Open concerned both Czech singles players who entered the third round matches. Marie Bouzková on the center court (Arthur Ashe Stadium) was not enough for world number five Uns Džábirová, who bravely resisted despite the injury. On the other hand, Markéta Vondroušová swept Ekaterina Alexandrová in two sets at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. Barbora Strýcová made it to the mixed doubles quarterfinals alongside Mexican Santiago Gonzalez.
Vondroušová spent less than an hour on the court
Markéta Vondroušová (9th) did not trouble Ekaterina Alexandrová (20th) on the court for too long. The native of Chelyabinsk saw off Louis Armstrong from the court in 57 minutes after sets 6:2, 6:1.
The world number nine dominated mainly on the return, on which she won all the games in the first set, she just needed to add two successes on her own serve to win the set. The second set was in a similar spirit, the Russian held her serve for the first time in the match only when she averted the threat of the canary, but then she was unable to reverse the end of the encounter on the receiving end, Vondroušová used the third match point won.
Vondroušová can thus look forward to the round of 16, in which she will meet Peyton Stearns (59th) from home.
Bouzková lost to Džabírová after a fighting performance
Marie Bouzková (31st) will not make it to the round of 16 of the US Open. In the 3rd round, the Czech tennis player was not enough for world number 5 Uns Džábirová (5th), who lost in two hours and 56 minutes after sets 7:5, 6:7(5) and 3:6.
The native of Prague finished the match with a leg injury that she sustained at the beginning of the second set. Still, she gave a very combative performance and no one would be surprised if she walked away from Arthur Ashe Stadium as a winner. In the tiebreak of the second act, she already led 4:3, but the following exchanges went to the side of the Tunisian. Džábirová set the pace of the match, scoring 56 winners and 63 unforced errors. And even though she didn’t exactly play her best game, it was enough for her health-indisposed opponent.
“I’m happy for the tennis I was able to play here. I appreciate the performance I performed despite the injury. I’m sorry for the loss, but more than anything else, I’m proud of myself,” Bouzková let herself be heard.
Strycová made it to the mixed quarter finals
Barbora Strýcová advanced to the mixed doubles quarterfinals alongside Mexican Santiago Gonzalez. In the round of 16, the Czech-Mexican couple beat the Chinese-German couple Chao-süan Yang, Kevin Krawietz, who sent them off the court in 54 minutes after sets 6:2 and 6:2.
Strýcová and Gonzalez allowed their opponents only three break points in the match, and they were able to prevent all of them. In the next stage of the US Open, they will face the Japanese-Croatian duo Ena Šibaharaová and Mate Pavič.
