When RB Leipzig signed Max Eberl, it was a coup. But after less than a year, the era of the sports director at the Saxons ends abruptly. RB does not tolerate flirting with other clubs.
On Friday morning, the usual press conference before a Bundesliga match day took place at RB Leipzig. The coach is usually present and, depending on the importance of the encounter, also a high-ranking person in charge. There would have been all sorts of reasons to put Max Eberl on the podium next to Marco Rose, after all Leipzig is hosting FC Bayern this Saturday (6.30 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the Bundesliga and on Sky). It’s the top game of the Bundesliga, fourth against first.
However, coach Rose came to the press conference alone. A hint of what would become certainty hours later. RB Leipzig separated from its sports managing director with immediate effect, and Eberl is released. Sports director Rouven Schröder will initially take over his duties, but without moving up in the organizational chart. Schröder will not be the sports director. After Eberl’s resignation, the position of sports director remains vacant. “The lack of commitment to the club led us to this decision,” the club announced very briefly late on Friday afternoon.
