Thanks to Bundesliga striker Wout Weghorst, the Netherlands have taken another step towards the European Football Championship in Germany.

Bond coach Ronald Koeman’s team took part in the European Championship qualifiers on Sunday evening Group B with 2:1 (1:1) in Ireland. Greece, the closest competitor for second place, easily won 5-0 (2-0) against Gibraltar.

Adam Idah (4th minute) initially gave the hosts the lead in Dublin with a hand penalty, a few minutes later Cody Gakpo (19th) also equalized with a penalty. Substitute Weghorst (56th) from TSG Hoffenheim finally secured the victory. The Dutch are third in Group B behind the Greeks, who have the same points, and the sovereign leaders France.

Greece didn’t have much trouble with outsiders Gibraltar. Dimitrios Pelkas (9th) and two braces from ex-Stuttgart player Konstantinos Mavropanos (23rd/82nd) and Georgios Masouras (70th/90th+1) ensured the success. Like the Dutch, the Greeks now have nine points, but have already played one more game.

Denmark wins in Finland

Denmark has also taken an important step towards the European Championship. Against Finland, the previous leaders of the Group H, the 2021 European Championship semi-finalist won 1-0 (0-0). Former Bayern professional Pierre Emile Hojbjerg scored the winning goal in the 86th minute. He gave Leverkusen keeper Lukas Hradecky no chance with a long-range shot. After six of ten games in the narrow group, Denmark is level on 13 points with leaders Slovenia and just ahead of Finland and Kazakhstan (both 12) in second place. Slovenia won 4-0 in San Marino, Kazakhstan beat Northern Ireland 1-0.

Poland loses in Albania

Poland, on the other hand, has to worry about its ticket to the European Championship after the embarrassing 0:2 (0:1) in Albania. The team conceded in the Group E the next bitter setback. Even former world footballer Robert Lewandowski, who was in the starting line-up, could not prevent the third defeat in the fifth qualifying game. Jasir Asani (37th) and Mirlind Daku (62nd) scored for the new league leaders from Albania. Poland is only fourth with six points with three games remaining. The Czech Republic (eight points), which has only played four games, is in second place, which also entitles it to take part in the European Championship.
