Novak Djokovic Advances to US Open Final for Record-Tying Tenth Time

Only at the end it got tight again!

Super star Novak Djokovic (36) will be in the final of the US Open for the tenth time on Sunday! The Serb, who will be number 1 in the world again as of Monday, defeated the American Ben Shelton (20) 6:3, 6:2, 7:6 (7:4). In the final it is against the winner of the game Carlos Alcaraz (20/Spain) against the Russian Daniil Medvedev (27).

He then cheered with the telephone gesture that Shelton usually cheers with. And he made the extra effort to hang up the imaginary phone. A clear message: “You’re not ready to beat me yet.”

Djokovic: “These are the matches I get up for every day. In the end it was very loud under the roof, we all love the atmosphere.” Because there was a threat of rain and then there was a thunderstorm, the roof was closed before the game.

The fact that Shelton hit by far the most aces in the tournament didn’t help him much this time. Although he scored many spectacular points, in the important moments the favorite was ice-cold and used all his experience.

Djokovic only stumbled a bit towards the end when he had to go into the tie break in the third set after losing two serves. After 2:40 hours, Djokovic finally converted his second match point.

The first surprise came as soon as the two players came onto the court. The cheers of the 24,000 spectators in Arthur Ashe Stadium for Djokovic were higher than those for the young star. Actress Charlize Theron (48) and rock star Jon Bon Jovi (61) were among those in the audience.

Impressive Djokovic numbers

Djokovic already had the first record secured before his 100th singles match in New York. No one before him has made 47 semi-final appearances at a Grand Slam tournament. He won 21 of the last 22 semi-finals, only losing in Paris in 2019 against the Austrian Dominic Thiem (30).

He would also be the oldest tournament winner in New York in the Open Era since 1968. For the third time after 2015 and 2021, the Serb also reached all four Grand Slam finals in one year. Overall, Djokovic is playing in his 36th major final, the number of times no other player has reached the final.
