Julian Nagelsmann: The New National Coach and the Journey to “Summer Fairy Tale 2.0”

National coach Julian Nagelsmann (36)!

On Friday, the ex-Bayern coach introduced himself to the football nation in his new DFB role, promising with a view to the home European Championship in 2024: “Summer fairy tale 2.0 – that is the ideal.”

What hardly anyone knows: The secret summit with Nagelsmann at which the decision was made took place in a surprising place: not on the Frankfurt DFB campus and not in Nagelsmann’s hometown of Munich – but in Cologne.

BILD knows: The journey as the new national coach began on Tuesday last week in the house of his advisor Volker Struth (57). The DFB also made initial contact with its agency “Sports360” after DFB President Bernd Neuendorf (62), Vice Hans-Joachim Watzke (64) and Director Rudi Völler (63) had decided on Nagelsmann as their preferred candidate.

Neuendorf about the course of the conversation: “Aki (Watzke, editor) was at the Dortmund Champions League game in Paris, so Rudi and I had this conversation. At first it wasn’t about contract details, but only later, when we had the feeling that it was working out. We talked to Julian a lot about his situation and how he would approach the job. Julian has a strong background in the club’s processes, we gave him the impression of what it means to be a national coach: What does he find here? How about the employees? How does a tournament work?”

Immediately after the secret meeting, it was clear to Neuendorf and Völler: “When we left, of course there was another conversation with Aki – but we agreed that we wanted to continue on the path now. Only then did discussions about contract details begin,” said the President.

Nagelsmann earns a total of around 3.6 million euros, 400,000 per month, in the nine months until after the European Championship. As BILD already reported, FC Bayern, where the released Nagelsmann continued to collect his estimated 7 million salary, is said to have made a compensation payment of 1 to 1.5 million euros to the coach.

Nagelsmann says: “I’m generally a gut feeling person, which isn’t always a good thing. But in general there was never a moment when I doubted.” And on the subject of salary cuts he makes it clear: “I don’t want any laurels for it, I’m fully aware that my job is still a privilege and I earn enough money . So it’s not something I’m patting myself on the back for.”

From now on the only thing that counts for him is “Summer Fairy Tale 2.0”!
