Impressive Wins and Gold Medals: Highlights from the Judo Championships

Exempted from the first round, Duyck began with a victory by ippon, against the Montenegrin Nikola Stanisic (unranked). He then beat the Italian Andrea Gismondo (IJF 137) and the German Lukas Vennekold (IJF 108) thanks to a waza-ari. In the final, the 21-year-old judoka won against the Swiss Lukas Wittwer (IJF 204) with two waza-ari.

Vicky Verschaere (23) started her tournament in the quarter-final with an ippon against Serbian Milica Cvijic (IJF 123). She was beaten by a waza-ari by the British Emma Reid (IJF 19), future winner of the tournament, but distinguished herself in the fight for the bronze medal against the Hungarian Nikolett Sagi (unclassified) thanks to two waza-ari.

Maxine Heyns (IJF 110) was eliminated in the first round in less than 70 kg (ippon) by the Swiss Gioia Vetterli (IJF 84). In more than 100 kg, Yves Ndao (IJF 103) lost upon entry against the Austrian Movli Borchashvilli (IJF 165) on waza-ari.

On Saturday, Ellen Salens, 26 years old, 33rd in the world, won the gold medal after her victory at the expense of the Spaniard Gemma Maria Gomez Antonia (IJF 50), 21 years old, in the under 48 kg final.
