Take a deep breath at the Towers. Hamburg’s basketball players were lucky to avoid embarrassment in the first round of the BBL Cup and won against second division Dresden Titans 88:85 (53:39).
The first decision before the game: the team once again chose Seth Hinrichs (30/USA) as their captain. European Championship hero Jonas Wohlfarth-Bottermann (33) is the equal second captain.
The second decision was made by coach Benka Barloschky (35): Of all people, the development player Terrell Gomez (25/USA), who was announced as “Floor General”, had to go into the stands as the seventh foreigner!
With Will Christmas (26) distributing the ball, the Towers led confidently at halftime. But then they gave the game away in the bad third quarter. There were also a total of 24 ball losses! Hamburg had to make up a 7-point deficit (72:79) in the last five minutes of the game.
Barloschky: “In the third quarter we lost the thread and lost control of the game. We have to be better when it comes to maintaining a lead. We found the thread again in the last quarter, and I’m very happy about that. We made big plays in the last few minutes, especially on defense.”
There was also luck when Dresden’s Grayson Scott Murphy (24/USA) missed a lay-up three seconds before the end…

The best Hamburg points collector in the surprise fifth of the last ProA season was center Aleksander Dziewa (25) with 19 points. The Polish international: “I think we had a lot of problems with defensive rebounding. But the biggest problem was our switching to defense. Dresden was able to score points far too easily. So we let them come back into the game. We have to manage to be more consistent throughout the season.”
But the bottom line is: The Towers are in the second round of the cup for the first time ever (October 15th). Now Bamberg comes to the island park.
