Bayer 04 Leverkusen is making great strides towards becoming one of the big success stories of the season.
Whether star coach Xabi Alonso will stay with the club beyond 2024 is questionable due to Real Madrid’s interest. However, with Exequiel Palacios, at least one of the key figures on the pitch will remain with the Werkself.
Palacios speaks of the “big name Bayer 04”
As the club officially announced on Tuesday, the Argentine world champion’s contract with the Bundesliga club will be extended early until 2028. His previous working paper would have expired in 2025.
“Exequiel Palacios has established himself as an incredibly important player for our Werkself. The fact that he was a full member of Argentina’s World Cup winning team at the World Cup in Qatar underlines his qualities as a team player and also as an individual,” Managing Director Sport Simon Rolfes is quoted as saying.
The player himself explains that he feels very comfortable in Leverkusen and was always able to develop further: “And the big name of Bayer 04 in my home country ensured that I always remained in the sights of the Albiceleste. It is clear that I now want to celebrate success in black and red.”
Palacios moved from River Plate to Germany in January 2020 for 17 million euros. Although he was previously labeled as a bad buy, he has now developed into an absolute key player in Bayer’s midfield alongside new signing Granit Xhaka. In the first five league games he has already contributed two goals and two assists for the current second-place team in the Bundesliga.
