THE WAITING of local badminton fans to see their favorite players in action at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games was met with disappointing results at the Binjiang Gymnasium here, Thursday night.
This is after Malaysia was eliminated by South Korea in the men’s team event as early as the first round, losing 1-3.
The main singles player, Lee Zii Jia, who is ranked 16th in the world, started the national squad’s discordant move, when he lost to world number 47 player Jeon Hyeok Jin 14-21, 21-14, 18-21.
Praise, however, must be given to the doubles pair of Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, who showed their own class to tame Seo Seung Jae-Kang Min Hyuk 21-17, 21-9, thus awarding the country its first point.
The streak failed to be continued by another national singles Ng Tze Yong who is in the top 20 in the world, when he was suddenly defeated by the 119th ranked player Lee Yun Gyu 11-21, 16-21.

Malaysia’s hopes of advancing to the next round were dashed, after the pair of Kim Won Ho-Na Sung Seung, had no problem overcoming another national doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi 16-21, 18-21, thus confirming South Korea’s progress to the quarter final stage.
South Korea will make a calculation against Indonesia in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, even though Malaysia was stranded in the first round, Aaron-Wooi Yik were each happy after winning, in their debut appearance at the Asian Games.
“Although we have been through many tournaments, but this is one of the main tournaments for us. We hope this debut will be a good debut for us,” said Aaron.
The national badminton camp will continue the challenge when each will go down in a non-team event, which is scheduled to start next Monday. – Named
