Angelique Kerber (35) played her last tournament so far at Wimbledon last year. In February, the former number 1 in the world tennis rankings became a mother. Now she is working on her comeback. As SPORT BILD learned, she has now brought a man to her side who she knows inside and out: ex-coach Torben Beltz (46).
The two have been training together at the Kerbers Tennis Academy in Puszczykowo (Poland) for weeks. In January, the German wants to get back on the tour. Two preparatory tournaments are planned, then the start at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

The successful coach, who once made the woman from Kiel number 1 in the world and led her to the Grand Slam tournament titles in Melbourne and at the US Open in 2016, is now working with her for the third time. After the retirement of Estonian Anett Kontaveit (27) after Wimbledon, Beltz was without a job. He had previously coached Emma Raducanu (20/Great Britain), the 2021 US Open winner, for five months.
The return to Kerber seems logical. “I was on the road without a coach before my baby break, but it’s clear that I need a coach for my comeback,” stressed Kerber recently. Experiments at the age of 35 would be nonsense. Kerber and Beltz both know what they’re made of. The adjustment period is gone.

With girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki (33), the 2018 Wimbledon winner also has a role model in her immediate vicinity. Just over a month after her comeback, the Dane reached the round of 16 at the US Open, with outstanding physique and playfulness as if she had never stopped.
Kerber was supposed to be the opponent in Wozniacki’s farewell game in Copenhagen in 2020, which was then canceled due to Corona. Both are constantly in contact, if only because of the mother role, which both fill. Here, too, Wozniacki, who, like Kerber, has Polish roots, is a role model. She goes on tour with her two children, and Kerber also wants to do that with daughter Liana.
