The Return of Stan Wawrinka: The Oldest Player to Win a Match at the US Open Since Jimmy Connors

Novak Djokovic is often in the news due to his performance and advanced age on the ATP Tour, but despite his longevity, Djoko is only 36 and looks to be in top form coming into the US Open.

A member of the “old guard”, he stands up to the new rising generation led by the electrifying Carlos Alcaraz.

Except that another veteran wants to make a few more waves before retiring and he started his tournament at Flushing Meadows in fine fashion.

The return of Wawrinka

After more than a year on the sidelines due to surgery on his left foot, Stan Wawrinka returned to action in the spring and has since crept up to No. 49 in the world.

Winner of the US Open in 2016, 38-year-old Wawrinka is confident he still has some good tennis to offer before he puts his racquets away for good.

While we have to go back almost ten years to relive Wawrinka’s years as a Grand Slam champion, he showed a lot of confidence in his game during the 1st round by dismissing the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka in three sets of 7-6, 6-2 and 6-4.

He thus became the oldest player since Jimmy Connors in 1992 to win a match at the US Open. Connors, at the time, was 40 years old and lost in the second round in what will be his last appearance in the tournament which he has won five times.

Still active on the circuit, John Isner is a month younger than Wawrinka and is still qualified for the tournament. Wawrinka also edged out Roger Federer in this regard despite the legend being a few months younger when he won his last match at the US Open in 2019.

The 38-year-old Swiss will, however, have a challenge worthy of him in the second round when the 30th racket of the tournament, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, will be on his way.
