A week and a half before the start of the Bundesliga, newly promoted Darmstadt 98 extended the contract with coach Torsten Lieberknecht by two years until 2027. The new agreement is a “clear sign of continuity”, also “an expression of our enormous respect for what has already been achieved” and last but not least “represents our absolute conviction regarding the future together with Torsten”, said President Rüdiger Fritsch.

Lieberknecht took over the lilies in the 2nd Bundesliga in the summer of 2021 and led them to fourth place in the table. Last season he remained unbeaten with his team from July 2022 to March 2023 in 21 league games, at the end of the season there was promotion. Because of the “high esteem” for Lieberknecht and the “trust” in his work, it was only “logical” to extend it early, said sports coordinator Carsten Wehlmann.
Lieberknecht himself described it as “an absolute privilege, but also a great obligation to be able to coach this club”. The 50-year-old led Eintracht Braunschweig to the Bundesliga ten years ago, but was immediately relegated with the team at the end of the 2013/14 season.
