What if Messi’s second season at PSG is better than it seems?

Leo Messi (Rosario, 1987) did not have the dream farewell to the Parque de los Príncipes. The defeat against Clermont (2-3) ‘watered down’ his goodbye. The ex of the Barcelona left between whistles of the ultras -rather out of spite- after two seasons in Paris in which He played 75 games, scored 32 goals, distributed 35 assists and won three titles: two Leagues and a French Super Cup.

“Brother, it didn’t turn out as we thought, but we tried everything. It was a pleasure to share two more years with you. Good luck in your new stage and be very happy. I love you”, wrote Neymar on ‘Instagram’.

The endearing wish of Messi’s son in his father’s last game: “Good luck”

Maybe his first season was not so good as some expected -Even so, he scored 11 goals, six in the League, and gave 15 assists-but the second is better than many say.

“Messi has some very interesting statistics”

“I am not going to talk about last season. I can talk about what we have experienced together this course and Messi has been impeccable. I listen to the comments and the critics, but he has some very interesting statistics. People always expect more, but his season was much better than the last”, he acknowledged. Christophe Galtier, in defense of Leo, a few days ago.

The numbers support the PSG coach’s theory. Within the five major leagues, counting Champions, there are only two players who have surpassed the barrier of 20 goals and 20 assists. One is Messi and the other is Vinicius.

According to ‘Transfermarkt’, Leo counts the penalties caused as assists, a total of 21 goals (16 in Ligue 1) and 20 assists -also 16 in the League- in the 41 games he has played this season with Paris Saint-Germain. What’s more, according to ‘Opta Jean’, no player in the five major leagues has given more assists (30) since the start of 2021-22.

At 35, Messi has closed the season as the top assistant (outstanding) in Ligue 1 with 16 goal passes. Neymar follows him, with 11.

Their numbers translate into good grades. The Argentinian has been, attending to the ratings of ‘L’Équipe’, the best player of the season in Ligue 1. Messi has been included 12 times in the ‘Team of the Matchday’ -more than any other player- and has the highest average grade (6.13 out of 10) of how many players are members of ‘Le Championnat’. They are followed by Frankowski and Medina, both from Lens, with 5.94 and 5.91 respectively. The second PSG player with the highest score -fifth overall- is Mbappé with 5.84.

On an individual level it has also been a good season for Leo. First, with Argentina, he got the only title that was missing from his record: the World Cup. In addition, he can boast of another great record: Messi (496 goals) has ousted Cristiano Ronaldo (495) as the all-time top scorer in the major leagues.

Much better than they paint it…
