Roland Garros 2023 | Carlos Alcaraz outclasses Lorenzo Musetti in three sets and goes to the quarters, he waits for Tsitsipas

The confrontation turned into a demonstration. While we expected a lot from the duel between the world number 1 and Lorenzo Musetti – the Italian, 18th in the world who arrived without having dropped a single set with impressive tennis – Carlos Alcaraz ended up dominating a one-way match, completed in three sets and 2h08 of play (6-3, 6-2, 6-2). The Spaniard will face Sebastian Ofner or Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals.

Musetti: two years later, the new major challenge

We believed in it for two games. By breaking the winner of the last US Open from the start, Lorenzo Musetti suggested that he could really cause problems for his opponent of the day. As he had done two years ago, against the then world number 1, Novak Djokovic, against whom he had led two sets to nothing before losing. Author of a failed start to the match, where he multiplied the unusual faults for him, Alcaraz however quickly rebounded.

Alcaraz left only crumbs

By pocketing five games in a row, against an opponent who let go too quickly, and tensed up, without managing to produce his best tennis, the big favorite of this 2023 edition quickly set the record straight. His coverage of the ground, his relentless defenses, succeeded in very quickly calming the inclinations of rebellion of the one who had won their only confrontation so far on the circuit, in the final of the Hamburg tournament last year.

Broken at the start of the second set, then again deprived of his service when he had just come back to 2-2, Musetti quickly dropped this second act. Constantly jostled in the service (only 51% of points won behind his first ball), he then missed the first two break opportunities in the last act.

A lack of bite that the Italian paid dearly, since he then saw Alcaraz again win five games in a row to close the deal. The clash between the Spaniard and Djokovic is getting closer, and it’s hard to see how Ofner or Tsitsipas could deprive us of it.
