Rennes: five left-wing activists attacked by armed and hooded men, the prosecution opens an investigation

An impressive attack which is part of a context of violence which is increasing in politics. The Rennes prosecutor’s office opened an investigation after the complaint of five left-wing activists who, according to LFI deputy Frédéric Mathieu, were attacked by “a group of hooded men” and armed while they were sticking up posters.

“During the night of June 5 to 6, during an action to stick up posters against the pension reform, a group of activists from France Insoumise and the Parti de Gauche were attacked by a group of “hooded men armed with truncheons, baseball bats and tear gas canisters”, writes the deputy of Ille-et-Vilaine in a press release.

“Five people are injured, all are shocked by the violence and the speed of the attack,” adds Frédéric Mathieu.

Investigation for intentional violence in meetings

The Rennes public prosecutor, Philippe Astruc, confirmed to AFP that five complaints were filed Tuesday at the Rennes police station. “An investigation for intentional violence in a meeting has been entrusted to the departmental security of Rennes”, he specified.

For Frédéric Mathieu, “it is now necessary to take the measure of this event in the continuum of extreme right-wing violence on our territory”. The deputy of La France Insoumise cites in particular “the resurgence of neo-Nazi tags” but also “attempts to sabotage drag readings in Saint-Senoux (Ille-et-Vilaine) and Lamballe (Côtes d’Armor) or an attack on students on the Rennes Beaulieu campus.

“The sluggishness of the state in the face of the situation of the mayor of Saint-Brevin”, who resigned after suffering threats from the far right and an arson at his home, “encourages violence by maintaining a feeling of ‘impunity,’ laments Frédéric Mathieu.
