Phoenix Suns new coach Frank Vogel

The Phoenix Suns, eliminated in the Western Conference semi-finals by the Denver Nuggets, will hire a new coach, Frank Vogel, from next season in the NBA.

The Suns have reached an agreement to hire former Los Angeles Lakers coach Frank Vogel, several American media reported on Friday. According to ESPN, the two sides are in the process of finalizing a deal that would see Vogel succeed Monty Williams, who was fired in May after being knocked out in the Western Conference semi-finals by the Nuggets (4-2). The latter will coach the Detroit Pistons next season.

The Athletic says a five-year, $31 million deal will bind them. The 49-year-old coach led Los Angeles to the title in 2020 in the anti-Covid bubble of Orlando, Florida. But the following season, marked by injuries, including that of star LeBron James, he was sacked. The non-qualification in the play-offs at the end of the 2021-2022 financial year had been fatal for the man from New Jersey.

In Phoenix, Franck Vogel should again lead a team made up of stars: Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Chris Paul, whose offensive talent is more recognized than their defensive potential. Sector in which the technician has made a specialty during his career, which began in Indiana in 2011.

Under his leadership, the Pacers were the best defense in the League for two years (2012-2013 and 2013-2014). From 2016 to 2018 he led the Orlando Magic, before joining the Lakers in 2019. He led these teams to the play-offs seven times in eleven seasons as head coach.
