The LIV Golf League was launched last year. The new circuit attracted many world class players with petrodollars from Saudi Arabia. The Belgian number 1 Thomas Pieters also took the bait.
The American circuit – PGA Tour – threatened to lose its status and refused to admit LIV players to its tournaments.
That stalemate is now coming to an end. In fact, the PGA Tour and the LIV Golf League are merging. The DP World Tour, the European golf circuit, is jumping into the dance. They had waved fines and suspensions in recent weeks.
“Great”, says American LIV player Phil Mickelson. “A historic day for the game we all love,” said Jay Monahan of the PGA Tour.
The golf world has been dominated for years by the American PGA Tour and the European DP World Tour. Last year the LIV Golf Tour suddenly appeared.
A newcomer is not always welcomed with open arms, especially when it comes to a golf tour financed with money from Saudi Arabia. Many golfers on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour succumbed to the lucrative LIV Tour.
LIV stands for 54 in Roman numerals: a reference to the number of holes played. 54 and not 72 as in the other tournaments.
