Frank Vogel is the new head coach of the Phoenix Suns. The 49-year-old follows Monty Williams at the NBA club, who was released after losing in the quarterfinals of the play-offs against finalist Denver Nuggets (2: 4). The club announced this on Tuesday.
For Vogel, who is known in the league for putting special emphasis on defense, it is the fourth stint as head coach in the NBA. The American has been on the sidelines with the Indiana Pacers, Orlando Magic and most recently three seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. With the Lakers, he won the championship with the team around stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis in 2020.
“This is an important day for our organization as we continue to build a championship culture on and off the court. Frank is an accomplished coach who knows how to win an NBA title,” said club owner Mat Ishbia.
Vogel is said to give Suns their first championship
Vogel himself was happy about his new challenge: “It’s an honor to be appointed head coach of the Phoenix Suns. The Suns are a first-class organization with a highly talented team that is dying to win. I’m grateful to have this opportunity and I’m excited ready to get to work.”
At the Suns, who have never won the championship, Vogel will now use his experience and skills to mold a talented team around Devin Booker and Kevin Durant into a title contender. He will be joined by Kevin Young, the franchise’s longtime assistant coach and now the league’s highest-paid assistant coach, and David Fitzdale, who the Suns signed from the Utah Jazz.
