Judo Grand Prix in Dushanbe: Tajikistan makes the triple

The Judo Grand Prix in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, ended on Sunday. And the arena in the capital was sold out again. Local hero Komronshokh Ustopiriyon took his third gold medal. It was a special experience for the fans.

“The Tajik boys love judo so much. It gives me energy. Thank you all,” Ustopiriyon said afterwards.

Anna Monta Olek had the day of her life and fought her way to the final where she met Anna Maria Wagner and surprisingly won gold.

“It was great, it was very noisy, better than many other places I’ve fought before, I liked the atmosphere. I like that a lot,” Olek later said.

In the 100 kg class Matvey Kanikovskiy won against Niiaz Bilalov and eventually won. And in the over 78 kg weight class, Rochele Nunes won gold in the final against Samira Bouizgarne.

In the 100 kg final, all eyes were on world number one Temur Rakhimov – who ultimately lost out to Tamerlan Bashaev and had to settle for silver.

This was Tajikistan’s sixth medal overall at this Grand Prix, with the country climbing to the top of the medal table.
