WHAT HAPPENED? New Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino has decided not to sign Joao Felix on a permanent basis despite the player’s desire to remain at Stamford Bridge. The winger not on Atletico manager Diego Simeone’s priority list, and complied Daily Mail, the rojiblancos has offered his services to Newcastle United, as they remain interested in offloading the forward.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: It is possible that The Magpies will sign him on loan, as happened with Chelsea, and cover his wages of over £200,000 per week. However, the high wages may be a stumbling block as Newcastle are unwilling to change their salary structure. Manager Eddie Howe admits that it is difficult to “attract the very, very best players on the market” as they are not a club that is going to pay high wages for their players.
AND WHAT ELSE: However, Felix’s move from Chelsea might be a blessing in disguise. If he stays at the London club, then he will not have the chance to participate in next season’s Champions League, while fourth-placed Newcastle in the Premier League could offer him a chance to play in Europe’s elite competition.
