Frankfurt am Main (ots) – Sporthilfe athletes choose the World Cup runners-up in first place ahead of judoka Giovanna Scoccimarro and table tennis doubles Dimitrij Ovtcharov & Patrick Franziska

Lost the World Cup final, but won many hearts – and the respect of Germany’s best young and top athletes: After their inspiring performance at the World Cup in Latvia and Finland, the men’s national ice hockey team is one of the approximately 4,000 athletes supported by Sporthilfe: was voted number 1 in the election for “Athlete of the Month” in May with an overwhelming majority of over 70 percent of the votes. Unlike, for example, journalists or audience elections, only Germany’s best young and top athletes vote in the election carried out by Sporthilfe, giving the award its very special touch – which the players of national coach Harold Kreis should be familiar with 23 of the 25 players were supported by Sporthilfe when they were young on their way to the top of the world.

For the team led by Captain Moritz Müller, the silver medal at the World Championships also includes an invitation to join the Sporthilfe Club der Beste. The incentive and event week for Germany’s most successful athletes of the year will take place in 2023 from September 23rd to 30th at the Aldiana Club Calabria in Italy. In addition, all players will receive an invitation to the Ball des Sports on February 17, 2024 in the Festhalle in Frankfurt am Main due to the “Sportsman of the Month” award.

Judoka Giovanna Scoccimarro, who won the silver medal at the World Championships in Qatar, came second in the “Sportsman:in of the Month” election. After the Olympic bronze medalist missed the World Championships last year due to a cruciate ligament injury, the 25-year-old came back impressively in Dohar with five victories and was only beaten in the final by the Japanese Saki Niizoe.

Table tennis duo Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Patrick Franziska came third in the Sporthilfe election in May. The doubles team, which was newly formed for the Table Tennis World Championships in South Africa due to Timo Boll’s injury-related absence, surprisingly won bronze in Durban. Only in the semifinals did Ovtcharov/Franziska lose the South Korean World Cup runners-up in five sets.

For their outstanding achievements, the athletes were nominated for the election by the athletes’ commission in DOSB, SPORT1 and Sporthilfe.

3. Dimitrij Ovtcharov & Patrick Franziska/table tennis: 7.0%
