Giants Climb the Bottom of the Mountain, But Getting to the Top Will Depend on Jones

From a probable end of career to survival and a new contract. Daniel Jones came out of the right failure and could allow himself to experience some more happiness in the NFL. The renewal bond was great for player and franchise: the New York Giants can continue to prepare the ground with a (now) reliable quarterback and the passer gets a new chance, trying to grow even more under the baton of Brian Daboll.

Even though the past year has been surprisingly positive, Jones can’t feel enough is enough. If it stagnates at the level of last season, it will force the Giants to look for another option, because, after good free agency and the Draft, the team already has the luxury of thinking about giving more work in the playoffs. What, then, are the next steps for Daniel to maintain his progression, demonstrating that his 2022 was no mere fluke?

Knowing how to brake in order to accelerate

When we look at Jones’ numbers in 2022, we may be surprised when we are faced with a shy 15 passing touchdowns throughout the regular season. Indeed, it’s a low stat, the lowest among quarterbacks who started at least 16 games. However, it is necessary to understand the importance of directing a new coach and how this impacts on the focus that a player has on the pitch.

Prior to Daboll’s arrival, Jones always had a serious turnover problem. In his first three seasons of his career, he had 29 interceptions and 36 fumbles, staggering numbers that demonstrate why his future in the NFL was in jeopardy. His new trainer, however, was a man with experience in the matter; after all, he was responsible for molding Josh Allen into one of the best quarterbacks in the league. The leader of the Buffalo Bills has always been an expert in explosive plays, but he had notorious difficulties with regard to decision-making in the first two years of his career.

Result: In 2022, Jones was intercepted just five times – his interceptions/pass percentage of 1.1% was the best in league over the past year — and cut his fumbles to a career-low six. The last statistic even becomes even better when we note that Daniel ran with the ball in more than 120 opportunities, surpassing 700 yards on the ground, that is, he was exposed to fumbles more than ever, but knew how to control the risk. .

All this shows us the difference of a really efficient technical command. Daboll couldn’t make his new quarterback better at everything at once, so he decided to focus first on cutting turnovers. By avoiding handing over the ball to the opponent, winning the game becomes less difficult, as triumph begins to depend less on Jones’ talent as a passer and more on the squad’s ability to demonstrate the collective strength.

If in 2022 it worked, however, in 2023 it will not be enough. Daniel’s big leap in the season is his ability, now, to add with more aggressiveness on the field. Knowing when to take a risk and try the hard way, without going back to being a turnover machine. With the growth of his relationship with Daboll, the improvement of the offensive line through the draft and the arrival of Jalin Hyatt to level the field, the ground is fertile. Now it’s up to him.
