Former Timberwolves GM David Kahn Regrets Passing on Stephen Curry in 2009 NBA Draft

Former Minnesota Timberwolves general manager David Kahn says he made a huge mistake in the 2009 NBA draft. Instead of picking NBA superstar Stephen Curry, who was drafted 7th by the Golden State Warriors, Minnesota signed point guard Ricky Rubio

Why did Kahn choose Rubio – and shooting guard Jonny Flynn – over Curry? Because Rubio and Flynn reminded him of “Walt Frazier and Earl Monroe,” Kahn says. Rubio later had a modest NBA career with the Timberwolves and wasn’t nearly as successful as Curry with the Warriors.

Timberwolves could have brought Curry in 2009

Flynn had to end his NBA career three years later because of a hip injury.

Minnesota’s tally was 89-223 during Kahn’s tenure as general manager. Kahn has long refused to admit he was wrong about picking Curry, despite the fact that the 2009 NBA draft was a total flop for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
