Decision made: ETB Miners remain in the regional league

Liga has not awarded the free license for Zweite Bundesliga ProB to ETB Miners but to Rostock. So it goes on with the Essenes.

Essen. Now it’s official: The basketball players of the ETB Miners stay in the first regional league, the Essen team is denied promotion to the second Bundesliga Pro B at the “Green Table”. The spark of remaining hope – gone.

In fact, the Pro B even had to fill up a place due to the license waiver of the Seeburger College Wizards, but the league awarded this free place to the BBL reserve of the Seawolves Rostock, by the way “only” the second regional league. “The vacated starting place in Pro B was allocated among the three other regional league teams who submitted a license application for ProB but did not achieve the sporting qualification for Pro B (including the Miners, editor’s note)”, it says in the press release of the Second Basketball Bundesliga.

Arguments for Rostock, but not against the ETB Miners

The decision was very difficult, ultimately nuances were decisive for Rostock. “In particular, the very committed and good youth work of the past few years has led us to this decision, because we want to offer young youth players from the NBBL and JBBL the opportunity to gain a foothold in professional basketball with Pro B.”

Well, an argument for the Seawolves, but by no means against the Miners, who also have teams in the NBBL and JBBL in the youth field and are also excellently positioned in all age groups. It remains unclear which “nuances” were decisive – well over 2000 fans at the basketball location Essen at the regional league finals (as well as four-digit spectator numbers at the playoffs overall) were obviously not.

The focus of the ETB Miners is still on the regional league when planning

“Of course we are disappointed,” says Miners board member Robert Hildebrandt openly and honestly. But looking ahead: “We had it in our own hands to make it up and didn’t make it. In all the planning over the last few days, we have focused on putting together a team for the first regional league, and that’s still where it is.”

Decisive days are coming up, but at best it should be a team that can be one of the favorites for promotion again. The Miners therefore have to deal with: Telekom Baskets Bonn II, DTV Basketball Köln, TSV Bayer Leverkusen II, Elephants Grevenbroich, TuS 59 HammStars, SV Haspe 70, BBA Hagen, UBC Münster II, BSV Münsterland Baskets Wulfen, Citybasket Recklinghausen, Hertener Löwen and Accent Baskets Salzkotten.
