After the death of a youth soccer player by a punch, the public prosecutor’s office interrogated the alleged perpetrator. The 16-year-old denies intentional action. The dismay after the deadly attack is great.

When the arrest warrant was issued, he is said to have stated that he could not remember hitting him. It was therefore all a big “mess”, said the spokeswoman for the Frankfurt public prosecutor’s office, Nadja Niesen, on Thursday of the German Press Agency.

The crime happened on Pentecost Sunday after the final whistle of an international youth football game in Frankfurt, in which a French and a Berlin team competed against each other. The alleged perpetrator is 16 years old and played for a team from Metz, France. The victim was 15 years old and played for a team from Berlin. The boy died on Wednesday from his severe brain injuries.

According to the public prosecutor, the 16-year-old is being investigated after the death of the victim for bodily harm resulting in death. He is in custody. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death. According to the public prosecutor’s office, it may take a few days before the result is available.

FC Metz expresses sympathy

The club FC Metz, where the alleged attacker is going through the performance program for young players, was dismayed by the death of the Berliner. “The entire FC Metz is deeply shocked by this drama and expresses its sincere condolences to the young player’s family and loved ones,” it said in a statement on Wednesday evening. All players and parents who had been in Frankfurt would be available to the German authorities to advance the investigation.

Frankfurt’s Lord Mayor Mike Josef (SPD) reacted deeply dismayed on Wednesday evening: “Violence has no place on the lawn. I expressly welcome the initiative of the Frankfurt Sportkreis to work through this tragedy carefully and promise any support. Football must remain a peaceful sport.” The sports group had announced that it would invite people to a round table in the near future.
