Andrea Pirlo Returns to Italy: Takes Charge of Sampdoria in 2023/2024 Season

Andrea Pirlo also returned home after a season coaching in Türkiye. Pirlo will handle Sampdoria in the 2023/2024 season.

Pirlo last coached Fatih Karagumruk who played in the Turkish Super League. However, he only lasted a year there and finally withdrew on May 24 due to Karagumruk’s poor performance last season.

Of the 36 matches with Pirlo, Karagumruk only won 13 times, drew 12 times and lost 11 times. Pirlo’s win ratio is only 36.11 percent and finished seventh in the Turkish SuperLiga.

Even though his career did not go smoothly in Turkey, Pirlo still seems to be attracting interest from Italian clubs. It was Sampdoria who decided to recruit Pirlo as a replacement for Dejan Stankovic.

Stankovic was also dismissed after failing to bring Sampdoria to stay in Serie A. They were relegated to Serie B as bottom with 19 points, a result of three wins and 25 defeats! This is the first time Sampdoria have been relegated after last dropping in 2011.

Pirlo was contracted for two years by club management with the target of returning Il Samp to Serie A next year. Pirlo will be assisted by his former compatriot in the Italian national team, Nicola Legrottaglie as Head of Performance and Lorenzo Giani as Head of Scouting.

For Andrea Pirlo, this is the second time he has managed an Italian team after the first for Juventus in the 2020/2021 season. Can Pirlo bring the 1991 Italian League champions to rise? Let’s wait.
