[하루만보]Hwagok Station, living in harmony with nature… One lap around Bongsan Mountain Dulle-gil

editorial commentThe subway is a means of transportation that anyone can easily access and move safely, and at the same time, it is also an important point for taking 10,000 steps a day. Here are some good places to walk around the subway station.

Residents using Bongsan Mountain Neighborhood Park.

The course to be introduced this time is the trail between Hwagok Station on Line 5 and nearby Bongsan Mountain. The name of Hwagok-dong, where Hwagok Station is located, is derived from the meaning of a village where rice grows well because the land is fertile. As the population soared due to the development that started in 1967, the first apartment building in Gangseo-gu began to prosper. The name of nearby Mt. Kkachi is also related to the development process of Hwagok-dong. With the development of Hwagok-dong, houses were built up to the middle of Bongsan Mountain, and there was no place for magpies to live. This mountain was given the name Kkachi Mountain.

The walking course starts from Exit 5 of Hwagok Station and passes through the nearby Chungwoo Insect Museum. Chungwoo Insect Museum is the only insect museum in the metropolitan area and exhibits about 1,500 rare insects from Korea and around the world. The three-story museum consists of a specialized store selling pet insects and breeding products, an exhibition hall for beetles from around the world, a hall for rare insects from around the world, and an ecology experience hall.

Next, head to Kkachisan Neighborhood Park via Hwagokbon-dong Catholic Church. Kkachisan Neighborhood Park, built on Mt. Kkachi, one of the stems of Mt. Bonggi, is a small park where local residents can relax and enjoy simple exercise. There are walking trails restored as an urban ecological forest, and exercise facilities such as badminton courts, foot volleyball courts, and gateball courts are installed.

Now it’s time to head for the Bongsan Mountain Dulle-gil. Bongsan Mountain, located between Hwagok-dong and Deungchon-dong, is the largest park in Gangseo-gu with an area of 910,000 square meters. Originally, it was called Baekseok Park because there were many white stones around it, but in 2004, the name was changed to its current name. Bongsan Mountain Dulle-gil is connected to see various attractions such as the ecology, history and culture, and landscape resources of Bongsan Mountain. If you come down through the Bongsan Mountain Dulle-gil, there is a Bongsan Mountain Neighborhood Park at the entrance of the hiking trail in the direction of Hwagokbon-dong. Also called a nature experience learning center, this park has a children’s playground, a wetland ecological garden, a silver grass field, and a community vegetable garden.
