“What I want now is to take some time and distance to reflect a little on where I am, above all, where I want to go. With this peace of mind I will decide my future as a player. Many times I have the feeling that I retired two seasons ago. I was able to do this for the last two seasons because it was Basketball Girona. I wouldn’t have done it for any other team. I have the feeling that Marc Gasol the player already fell by the wayside in some way a couple of years. I have had the great fortune to live unique experiences during these two seasons at Básquet Girona and to have collaborated in this growth as a player, which I was excited about. I don’t know when I will take the decision, whether it will be two weeks from now or a month. I don’t have it planned, but it will be a decision made with peace of mind. I have emptied myself and I have a lot of peace,” he says.
“I will make the decision with distance and calmness, taking stock of how the year has gone. I will look at the big picture to see if I can face the next challenge and then I will start making the decision, but without any drama” , summarizes the player, who manages social networks independently, without the help of professionals. When he announced two summers ago that he would change the NBA for Girona, he did so by uploading an image of one of the Dupont brothers from Tintin, a resource that he later repeated.
“Marc Gasol knows how to play a lot. Whenever he has been able to play because his physical problems have allowed him to do so, he has brought us his wisdom. He has not been able to have continuity, but he made a very great effort to play the last two games against Zaragoza and Baskonia. He has been taking medication. Although I am very happy with the progress of the young people, when he is on the field it has nothing to do,” says Aíto García Reneses, coach of Básquet Girona. “For me it was important to finish the season on the court, with my teammates,” Gasol acknowledges.
“Marc’s decision will influence the construction of the squad, for its quality and for everything it means, but it is a secondary issue that does not excessively affect the drawing of the team”, analyzes Jordi Plà. The sporting director of Básquet Girona makes a positive assessment of the first season in the Endesa League. “There was only one goal, which was to be one of the best 16 teams in the League, and from that point of view we are very happy, for the club and because the fans who have been with us since day one will be able to enjoy another year of the ACB”, says the ex-journalist.
“Challenges and Obstacles”
“We focused all our energies on making Fontajau see a team he could be proud of. In the last few weeks we experienced unnecessary tension, until we managed to certify salvation. The season has been full of challenges and obstacles, but we have overcome,” says Gasol, who left the stadium on Wednesday with a liturgy that suggests he will opt for retirement. “My head works differently and I try to make the decisions when I have to make them,” recalls the also president of Básquet Girona, a club that has taken root. The waiting list to get a pass is getting longer and longer. “Consolidating the sports side is important, but for me the club is much more than the results of the first team. It is where there is more noise and light, but success goes much further. This year we started a basketball project base together with Uni Girona. I’m very happy and it’s very positive. I really want to continue building the base, which is what really makes an impact,” he adds.
