Valladolid will host ‘Olympic Day’ on June 3, an event that will take place with athletes of international projection and with multiple sports disciplines that are part of the competition that the International Olympic Committee organizes every four years. Olympic Day has been celebrated annually since 1948 in the month of June to commemorate the creation of the Modern Olympic Movement worldwide.
As explained by the mayor, Óscar Puente, this Day “promotes ideals such as fair play, perseverance, camaraderie, respect for sports and, at the same time, encourages people to practice physical activity.”
On the other hand, under the motto ‘Move, learn, discover’, sports activities will be carried out in the following disciplines: rhythmic gymnastics, karate, judo, table tennis, taekwondo, fencing, badminton, synchronized swimming, lifesaving, mountaineering and climbing , handball, rugby, archery, paddle tennis, tennis and skating
All activities will be carried out free of charge and advice will be available from the staff of the organizing entities.
The day, presented by the mayor in an act that was also attended by the president of the Spanish Olympic Committee, Alejandro Blanco, and the Councilor for Citizen Participation and Sport, Alberto Bustos, will begin at 11:00 with the opening ceremony, the parade of the athletes, the hoisting of the Olympic flag, the Olympic anthem and the passing of the Olympic torch.
The mayor has pointed out that this day will have the presence of “outstanding Olympic athletes” who will participate in the different activities, including the canoeist David Cal, the gymnasts Carolina Pascual, Sandra Aguilar and Elena López, the judoka David Alarza, the Olympic medalist in synchronized swimming Laura López, among others.
“Valladolid is a city linked to sports that hosts numerous events in many sports disciplines, and Olympic Day is going to be added to this,” said Puente, while also showing his conviction that it will be a “resounding success “and that it will have” a lot of citizen participation.
For his part, Alejandro Blanco has emphasized that Olympic Day will bring the spirit that lives in thousands of countries due to the Olympic Games closer to citizens, through activities in which they can share and enjoy “beautiful experiences” practicing sports .
