Baseball United, the professional baseball league that will be played in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, announced on Tuesday the second franchise that will compete in this tournament that seeks to expand baseball to that area of Asia.

The first will be the Mumbai Cobras, the first professional baseball franchise in India, while the second will be the Karachi Monarchs of Pakistan, a country that has historically been one of India’s biggest rivals politically and sportingly.

Karachi is a city of almost thirteen million inhabitants that is located in the southern part of Pakistan. It is an important port center and, in addition, it also has a cricket team called the Karachi Kings. Thanks to MLB’s Kings and Kansas City Royals, the Monarchs inspired their name.

Kash Shaikh, American businessman and president of Baseball United, applauded the announcement of the Karachi Monarchs as a new franchise in his competition: “It is an honor to welcome the great city of Karachi to the Baseball United family.”

In this way, the first great rivalry will emerge in Baseball United, since Cobras and Monarcas are not only the first teams announced in the league: as previously stated, they are two franchises belonging to countries that have had strong tensions at a historical level . Shaikh spoke about it: “I can’t wait to witness the growth of this next great sports rivalry.”

Since both countries became independent from the British Raj in 1947, there have been various conflicts between the two parties due to religious and territorial differences. The clearest example of this is the Kashmir war, the last confrontation of which took place in 2021.

Indian and Pakistani citizens, while maintaining tensions inherited from their leaders, want peace in Southeast Asia. Thus, they have brought the rivalry between their countries to the field of sport: first with cricket and now with baseball.
