They investigate a basketball coach for sexual abuse




They investigate a basketball coach from the lower categories of Baskonia for an alleged sexual assault on a player. The events allegedly occurred last season when the victim and the attacker met at the Toju Basketball Club.

For his part, The Alava Basketball Federation and Baskonia have removed him from his duties after the accusations and have decided to suspend “the denounced person from all activity”.

The player was “underage”

Apparently, at the time of the events, the athlete was a minor and both coincided in the junior team of the Toju Basketball Club of Vitoria. This season, the complainant and the defendant no longer shared a team or club.

The person investigated is currently a coach of the lower categories of Baskonia, an entity that has decided to remove him from his duties “immediately” as soon as this complaint was made public. Also, he has had his license withdrawn to continue practicing as a technician.

For its part, the Toju Basketball Club, to which the player and coach belonged, has issued a statement in which it condemns any act of violence in sports and supports the complainant. Although qualifies that the facts were not brought to the knowledge of the Club.

“Intolerable, reprehensible and denounceable”

For his part, the Alava Basketball Federation considers it “intolerable, reprehensible and denounceable” any attitude, comments, harassment, intimidation or sexual assault that occurs between players and coaches. In addition, they unconditionally support the victim and although they respect the presumption of innocence of the investigated, they separate the coach from any federated practice.

“We reject and deeply regret any type of behavior that threatens the personal integrity and freedom of women, betting on and defending a model of fair and egalitarian relationships”, The Federation has expressed through a document signed by its president, Luis Miguel Corres.

Finally, the Federation recalled that all members, players, coaches, clubs and referees “have the right to enjoy basketball, without having to experience any feeling of insecurity for reasons of sex or gender”.
