The poet and playwright Antonio Gala has passed away this Sunday in his beloved Córdoba at the age of 92
The writer, born in Brazatortas (Ciudad Real), had nearly 500 works and numerous awards

In full electoral day, we have known the death of the poet and playwright Antony Gala to the 92 years, one of the most recognizable, media and widely read literary icons. The writer suffered from cancer and had spent years away from public life in the convent where he opened his own Foundation for young creators.
Gala, born on October 2, 1930 in the Ciudad Real municipality of Brazatortas, but raised in his beloved Cordobawhere he died, was the author of great successes such as ‘La pasión turca’, made into a film by Vicente Aranda, ‘El manuscript crimesí’ or ‘Rings for a lady’.

A precocious writer, at the age of five he wrote a short story and at seven, his first play. He was one of the most prolific authors in our country and received various awards throughout his career, such as the Planet Award or the National Literature Prize. In addition, he was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts and was a Favorite Son of Andalusia.
Their about 500 works they were full of sensitivity. In them, the magnificent novelist spoke openly about love, desire or death. And, almost always, with women as the main protagonists of his stories.
In her facet as a columnist, Gala worked in newspapers such as Pueblo, Sábado Gráfico, Actualidad Española, El País and El Mundo. Currently, she collaborated in the latter with the column titled La Tronera, of which she published a compilation in 1996. Several of his series of articles have subsequently seen the light of day as books.
In addition to being a columnist, he was also lecturer on literary subjects, especially theater. From this last area, titles such as ‘Today’s theater, tomorrow’s theater’ or ‘The myth of freedom’ stand out.
The Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, said that “we have lost one of our greatest writers. Antonio Gala knew how to capture human sensitivity through his narrative, his poetry and his theatre”. The Minister of Culture, Miquel Iceta, has lamented the death of the writer and has stressed that his work “will endure forever.”
The burning chapel will be installed in the auditorium of the Antonio Gala Foundation and will remain open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. this Monday.
