The End of Washington’s “Age of Shadows”

The end of a long storm. This is the great hope of Washington Commanders fans. The beginning of the process, however, does not take place inside the field, but outside it. Dan Snyder, troubled owner of the team since 1999, finally took his claws out of command of the franchise. In a $6 billion deal, a group of investors led by Josh Harris will now take over the team.

Among other sporting projects, Harris also leads the Philadelphia 76ers, a team that has been an example of the NBA’s rebuilding process in recent years. The investor group also contains another basketball league character: Magic Johnson, one of the sport’s greatest legends. More than the narratives, however, the new leadership brings new hope.

With the expectation of, finally, living a correct command, the Washington fans expect to see a age of darkness be left behind. Marked much more by its former owner’s off-field scandals than by improvements on the field, 2023 is the first blank page of what is expected to be a new history in the American capital.

coming out of the dark

How sad is it when its last moments of glory come from the end of the last century? For those who lived at that time, at least, there were not a few. In the 1980s, Washington won two titles and, in 1991, secured another trophy with one of the strongest rosters in league history. Afterwards, a desert of happiness.

In Snyder’s 24 years at the helm of the franchise, in only five their campaign was positive, with six appearances in the postseason. In none of them, it went beyond the Conference Semifinal. It is a resounding failure. From the lost decade with Bruce Allen, to the deplorable acts of the owner and the desperate end with the attempt to triumph with Carson Wentz. One dark period.

That’s why change of command is much more important than it appears on paper. Washington is leaving a troubled period behind, in an attempt to regain the relevance it once had. This takes on even greater scale when Harris, the new owner, has had a similar recent success in basketball. The 76ers were a triumphant team in the past that had a bad run and seemed to be in a bottomless pit.

From the moment that Josh bought the team at the beginning of the last decade, however, a process of reformulation was initiated that would place Philadelphia as clear favorite in the last few seasons – the infamous, The Process. Even if the title was not achieved, the success is evident. It took a few years to put the house in order, but from the moment everything was put in place, the presence among the heads was guaranteed.

Therein lies Washington’s hope. Finally, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
