Annaberg-Buchholz (Saxony) – This is real football love: although he will probably be bedridden until the end of his life, Thomas Schumann (42) recently had his house painted completely purple!
“It would be my dream to see it with my own eyes one day,” says the Erzgebirge native somewhat wistfully. Because he only knows the purple exterior from pictures.
To do this, however, the overweight man would have to be hoisted outside somehow with belts by the fire brigade. Because he has been suffering from an inherited cell and metabolic disease for several years, which causes his body to continue to grow due to water retention and ultimately leads to death.
The former trucker has never lost his happiness. “There are only two options: give up or move on,” he says. And the football fan has clearly opted for the latter option. He is supported above all by his wife Mandy (40): “I hope that we can enjoy a few more years of time together,” said the delivery lady.
The third division soccer club FC Erzgebirge Aue is Schumann’s great passion. For over 20 years. “Other than that, I hardly ever watch football,” he says with a laugh. He once became a violet fan through his best friend Detlef, who died of a brain tumor in 2015 at the age of only 50.
Schumann: “I said to him at the time: If I ever have a house, it will be painted purple and white in the club’s colours. And I keep what I promise.” No sooner said than done. His wife wasn’t enthusiastic, but she couldn’t refuse his heart’s desire and said yes again out of love…
