Only in Madrid!
The organizers of Masters tournaments bought models. But not to entertain the Vip’s, but as a ball girl. On Center Court they performed their duties in tight tops and short skirts.
Many liked it, some didn’t. The sexism club was quickly brought out again. The Secretary of State for Equality of the Spanish Government, Soledad Murillo (67): “Women are discriminated against because they are presented as objects of pleasure and serve as decoration.”
They just did their job and did it brilliantly. No accidents or slapstick when rolling or catching balls or interacting with players. This was preceded by a week-long training course.
Nevertheless, the criticism seemed to have hit the organizers. In the final, which Carlos Alcaraz (20) against Jan-Lennard Struff (33) won, the models were still wearing tops, but the short skirts were replaced by knee-length pants.
In Madrid, by the way, models have a long tradition. Ex-tournament director and Boris Becker manager Ion Tiriac (84) introduced them in 2004. They had to be between 19 and 28 years old. Normal ball kids are well under 18. Then the authorities asked what was going on with child labor, especially late in the evening.
Then as now, the models were recruited from various agencies from all over Spain. In 2006 there were even male models. Spanish Federation of Women in Professional Sports spokeswoman Pilar Calvino is urging the tournament to change its ways: “It’s a form of sexist violence that’s so widespread that people don’t even realize it.”
Where the violence is supposed to be, however, remains its secret. In any case, none of the players complained.
