“I have no words for this. I felt super good all day and really believed in it.”
It was an emotional Arne Marit who spoke to our Giro man Renaat Schotte after the mass sprint in Caorle.
“I came out of the last corner perfectly. When it came to a standstill, Dainese moved in at the right time.”
“I came out of the slipstream perfectly. But the moment I go full throttle, my chain comes off.”
Marit quickly got his chain back in place. “I turned it on a second time, but then the chain came off a second time.”
Disbelief and disappointment prevail in the young Belgian. “I don’t understand. I shifted very smoothly throughout the entire ride. It is precisely in that sprint that things go wrong.”
“Today is really a missed opportunity for my first stage victory in the Giro. I think I can say that I had the legs to win.”
Is this the biggest disappointment of Marit’s young career?
“I don’t think I’ve ever given an interview with tears in my eyes. I won’t be able to sleep tonight because of this.”
