Sensation at Roland-Garros! World number 2 formerly at odds with the ground but today more in phase, Daniil Medvedev was eliminated as soon as he entered the running by the Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild, after five sets and 4:20 difficult to read and with a terrible outcome for him (7-6, 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4). This is the fifth time in his career that the Russian has come out in the 1st round at Roland, the first since 2020. The bottom of the table has lost its biggest seed.
“I may have higher expectations than usual at Roland-Garros but I know it can be a trap. We say to ourselves ‘it’s going to be easy’ and from the first round you have a problem, you get angry and you miss a match“. These words of Daniil Medvedev are barely four days old and resonate strangely this Tuesday. In a pre-tournament press conference, the winner of the Masters 1000 in Rome had prophesied a possible early fall, he probably did not hope to have right at this point…

And yet Seyboth Wild ruined…
On a day a bit windier than the first two Porte d’Auteuil, in front of an audience who took up the cause of his opponent, simply because he was the outsider of the day, Medvedev got lost. This match he dropped in five sets, he could have lost it before but winning the second set seemed to revive him. This second tie-break of the match was promised to Seyboth Wild who, at the head of two set points, completely harvested the first with an “easy” forehand. It was enough for the Russian to put his head back in place.

In the all-too-familiar scenario of the headliner turning the match upside down after coming close to being completely underwater, the world’s No. 2 player was taking his part. It was no surprise that he had pocketed the third set to switch to two sets to one (7-6, 6-7, 2-6). Launched then Medvedev? Not at all because his tennis was not yet in place, starting with his commitment (15 double faults over the whole game). And in front of him, the pure earthling that is Seyboth Wild had enough of a day to take advantage of Medvedev’s weakness.
The bad Medvedev
Supported by a huge part of Philippe-Chatrier, the Brazilian played his luck so bravely that he destabilized his opponent a little more, whose bad character sometimes came out against the ball boys or the public. Launched in a tense fifth set as possible, the two went blow for blow.

A break for Seyboth Wild at the start, which sent shivers down the aisles of the Central, another for Medvedev to come back to 2-2. Then an exchange of lost services up to 4-3 in favor of the Brazilian. While everyone at Roland-Garros still believed that Daniil Medvedev could get away with it, his opponent grabbed the lines to tell everyone that this match would no longer work. He no longer toured and Thiago Seyboth Wild was living his greatest dream (7-6, 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4). Opposite, Daniil Medvedev was in his worst nightmare.
