Sclessin spits out Ronny Deila and sees Standard fall heavily again

The turbulent week with the departure of coach Ronny Deila to Club Brugge has cut into Standard. A resigned home team lost 0-4 to Cercle Brugge.

No Ronny Deila on the bench at Standard for the remaining two matches of the Liège team. After an earlier denial, the Norwegian coach announced that he will be in the dugout at Club Brugge next season. It was Geoffrey Valenne who did the honors on the sidelines at the Rouches. He dropped William Baliwisha and Cihan Canak into the base. Lucas Nobi Ngnokam and Renaud Emon (sick) left the team after the 3-0 defeat against Westerlo last week. At Cercle, coach Muslic changed his team in two places after the 2-2 against AA Gent. Siquet and Ravych (after suspension) kicked off again, Francis and Somers moved to the bench.

The supporters of Standard had done their homework: they soon unfurled a banner with an unmistakable message to Deila: ‘You’ll see the treatments deserved for traitors‘. The Standard players, on the other hand, appeared to be in holiday mode already. After weak defending at a corner, Jean Marcelin saw his chance for a hard slide. Goalkeeper Bodart had no chance at the 0-1 for Cercle. The goalkeeper was in a shooting booth in the first half hour, but was about the only Liège resident at the appointment.

Liege’s fire is extinguished

Even after the break there was little improvement. In minute 51, Denkey got too much time and space from Dussenne. Cercle’s Togolese put the ball ready for his left, and kicked in hard and low from the corner. More than ten minutes later, substitute Abu Francis turned off the lights from Liège: he received the ball from Gboho and put the ball flawlessly into the corner.

For Standard it was time to book after that third goal. The Liège public was positively noticed with heart-warming applause for the departing Gojko Cimirot and captain Noe Dussenne. Even Cercle player Hugo Siquet, who was trained in Liège, got his hands together. It did not inspire Ayase Ueda any mercy: in the 92nd minute, the Japanese striker of Cercle hit the ropes for his 22nd of the season. The season could last a little longer for Cercle, but the fire has been extinguished in Liège: Standard has not yet been able to win a single time in this play-off.
