“Schalke-Bayern-Dimension”: Third division team inadvertently celebrates promotion too early

Third division accidentally celebrates promotion too early

After the final whistle, the whole of Wiesbaden thinks SV Wehen has been promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. But the parallel game in Osnabrück is still running. And that’s where something spectacular happens: VfL turns their game in added time. In the end, the celebrations in Wiesbaden had to be broken off.

The “climber of hearts” had to quickly delete the somewhat hasty tweet. “Through our victory and the simultaneous defeat of VfL Osnabrück, we are promoted directly to the 2nd Bundesliga,” wrote the social media department of SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the delirium of joy – and about the premature celebrations with the fans on the pitch Reckoned without the furious final spurt of Osnabrück. At the end of the dramatic season finale in the 3rd division, VfL celebrated on Saturday afternoon.

“I think that was the Schalke Bayern dimension,” admitted Wiesbaden assistant coach Nils Döring, who represented his suspended boss Markus Kauczinski, after the 1-0 (1-0) win against Hallesche FC at MagentaSport. The fact that the whole process was actually reminiscent of the heartbeat final in the fight for the championship between Schalke 04 and Bayern Munich 22 years ago left Döring speechless: “I’m a little lost for words now.”

Because the message needed time to arrive in Wiesbaden. After the 1-0 win over Hallesche FC, the fans stormed the pitch and went through the usual program: cheering grapes, polonaises, beer showers. At this point, injury time is just beginning in Osnabrück – VfL is 1-0 down against BVB’s second team. Wiesbaden is justifiably jubilant: Because Osnabrück would have to be relegated with this result.

But in added time, the unbelievable happened in Lower Saxony. The two late Osnabrück goals (90+4 and 90+6) make it 2-1 (0-0). Ba-Muaka Simakala and Jannes Wulff ensure VfL’s seventh promotion to the single-track second division – just one goal ahead of Wehen Wiesbaden. “I think we can only do sick things,” said goalkeeper Philipp Kühn in the middle of the purple and white flood that spilled onto the lawn at Bremer Brücke after the final whistle: “Kick my ass…, you have to do that first process.”

Stadium spokesman already wishes “nice summer”

Meanwhile, the cheering continues in Wiesbaden, as the TV pictures show. Fans continue to storm the pitch. This is garnished by an irritated TV commentator who keeps trying to explain that Wiesbaden still has to be relegated. “The problem is: They think they’ve been promoted,” he exclaims, almost in desperation. Meanwhile, the party continues on the field. There is singing, dancing. “Oh my goodness,” the commentator exclaims. While Osnabrück makes the second goal, hugs are still distributed in Wiesbaden.

But then it gradually tilts. People suddenly have their cell phones in their hands. You can see how the celebrating fans gradually explain to each other that promotion hasn’t worked out yet. Not everyone gets the message. While children are still cheering for the cameras and the stadium announcer hastily wishes a “nice summer”, it is clear that there are still two relegation games to come before the holiday. In the off, the commentator is surprised that the message doesn’t get around faster. “Or are you so satisfied with the relegation? No, I don’t think so,” the reporter exclaims.

But then: the stadium announcement that explains everything. “If you take out your cell phone and look at the results, it becomes clear: Unfortunately, we in Wiesbaden have nothing to celebrate.” The spokesman calls it “bad news”. “Unfortunately, I have to report that Osnabrück is leading 2-1.” The murmuring is clearly audible, the revelers collectively throw their hands over their heads. And the visiting fans from Hallensche FC start to cheer.

Then relegation

Meanwhile, the opposite is happening in Osnabrück. The pitch storm there should be the prelude to a huge party, for which VfL goalkeeper Kühn estimated “at least four days”. After the celebration on the town hall square, the players later disappeared together with the supporters into the pubs in the old town until the early hours of the morning. Coach Tobias Schweinsteiger had previously given the go-ahead for the break: “Today you can drink whatever you want.”

On the other hand, drinks against frustration were not only needed in Wiesbaden, but also at 1. FC Saarbrücken and at Dynamo Dresden. The FCS and the Dresdner coach Markus Anfang (“It hurts a lot”) ended up one point behind Osnabrück and Wehen. “It’s a very big emptiness for everyone,” said FCS coach Rüdiger Ziehl. The Wiesbadeners, who were there in the relegation on Friday and June 6th against the 16th table, have to shake themselves quickly. the 2nd league can still create.

SV Elversberg, already in the second division, secured the championship with a 2-1 (1-0) win at FC Ingolstadt ahead of SC Freiburg II, who are not allowed to be promoted. SV Meppen, Oldenburg, FSV Zwickau and SpVgg Bayreuth had already been relegated. So far, Preußen Münster, VfB Lübeck and SSV Ulm have climbed into the 3rd division.
