It was an opt-out clause that should only deter teams from the Premier League to a limited extent. For SC Freiburg it is still a proud sum that Mark Flekken will bring them. As the Freiburg officials had already announced, the goalkeeper is moving to FC Brentford for 13 million euros.
Last summer, U-21 national player Kevin Schade made his way from Freiburg to Brentford, which even brought in around 25 million euros for the sports club. The financial situation of the Breisgauer is impressive these days.
The Netherlands goalkeeper (four caps for Oranje) signed a contract until 2027 when he finished ninth in the Premier League last season and won both league games against champions Manchester City.
“I experienced five incredibly intense years in Freiburg, with lows like my serious injury and many highs like the games in the Europa League, the DFB Cup final and great performances in the Bundesliga,” Flekken said in a statement. “I would like to thank those responsible who have placed and kept their trust in me over the years. The time at the sports club has shaped me and I am grateful to be able to experience this as an athlete and as a person.”
Atubolu becomes regular keeper in Freiburg
Flekken came to Freiburg from MSV Duisburg in 2018, where he has been a regular goalkeeper for the past two seasons. In the past season he was used in all 34 Bundesliga games (44 goals conceded, kicker average score 2.82), 13 games without conceding were the best.
“Five years ago we showed Mark a clear perspective and we consistently followed this path together. He didn’t let setbacks throw him off track and we trusted him in difficult phases – that connects,” explained sporting director Jochen Saier. “We would like to thank Mark for his work on and off the pitch and for the successful time we spent together at the Sport Club. We wish him all the best for his move to London.”
SC Freiburg don’t have to worry about Flekken’s successor, because it has already been decided: Germany U-21 national keeper Noah Atubolu, who recently played mainly in the second team (3rd division), but has also made two appearances in the DFB Cup and one in the Europa League is promoted to the new number 1.
