Premiere in Austria: First Judo Grand Prix in Linz

The World Judo Tour stops in Upper Austria. And for the first time ever. The athletes are fresh from the World Championships and naturally wanted to take this momentum with them.

Linz, Austria hosts the World Judo Tour. The spectators in the TipsArena were hot for world-class judo. And that’s what they were offered.

Marusa Stangar was considered the favorite in the 100-pound division and lived up to her role. With her usual dominant floor work, she turned the tables on the Spaniard Laura Martinez in the final and won her first Grand Prix gold in five years.

“The audience here in Austria is pretty loud,” said the newly crowned medal winner, who was happy “that I can also show my qualities in Ne-Waza”.

In the men’s category, Romain Valadier Picard from France won the gold medal in the 60 kg class. He won his final against the Ukrainian Dilsho Ukrkhalmatov.

In the under 52 kg category, Japan’s Kisumi Omori showed all her judo skills when she defeated Hungary’s Roza Gyertyas. She won her first Grand Prix gold ever.

In the class up to 66 kg, the Spaniard David Garcia Torne won – in the final he beat Kamran Suleymanov from Azerbaijan. For him it was “a very important medal,” Garcia Torne explained later. “Because I haven’t had any gold yet, that gives me more confidence.”

In the class up to 57 kg, Pleuni Cornelisse from the Netherlands, after two silver medals, finally got her first gold medal. She defeated the German judoka Seija Ballhaus in the final.

On the first day of the Grand Prix, the audience in Austria once again experienced the local matador Sabrina Filzmoser, who competed in her last tournament in her home country. Bernadette Graf, who said goodbye in front of the home fans, was also honored. On Friday we continue with the Grand Prix in Upper Austria.
